Ink-on-Ink Effects and Vintage Texture—Without Losing Clarity
The Challenge
World Market’s red-and-beige beverage carrier wasn’t your average print job. The design called for full beige coverage underneath red artwork—an unconventional request. Add to that a vintage-style speckled distressing effect and fine copy across the panel, and you’ve got a recipe for potential ink clashes, coverage issues, or lost detail.
Our Approach
This job was all about collaboration, especially with the ink vendor and the box house. The design had a clear artistic vision, and we were committed to making it work on the press.
Ink Strategy: Coordinated directly with the ink vendor to test and approve overprinting beige ink under red
Distressed Texture: Sized and adjusted the speckle pattern so it held on press without overpowering the design
Plate Selection: Thin polymer plate allowed fine speckles and copy to remain visible
Substrate: Tight e-flute corrugated—smooth, high-quality, and ideal for detailed work
Managing ink chemistry, impression, and material performance in tandem was key to maintaining the artist’s intent while ensuring technical success.

The Results
Full ink coverage without flooding or ink clash
Speckled texture held up by creating an authentic, vintage look
Copy remained sharp even over heavy coverage
No remakes, no surprises: just a clean execution of a creative vision
“They didn’t want the beige around the red—they wanted it under the red. That’s not typical. But we made it work through collaboration and control on press.”
