Case Study: Inventor’s Toolkit Packaging

Collaborative Color Strategy + Fine Detail = A Showcase-Worthy Box

The Challenge

The Inventor’s Toolkit packaging was bold in both design and ambition. Featuring intricate linework, layered turquoise effects, and registration-sensitive illustrations, the box needed to work visually and mechanically, on a large-format structure that folded in multiple complex panels.

The trickiest elements?

Rendering two distinct turquoise shades using just one ink color

Managing registration across thin lines and continuous illustration

Achieving precise traps without compromising artistic intent

All while printing on kraft board and incorporating black, white, and turquoise to simulate five-color depth using only three inks.

Our Approach

This was a true collaboration; Dynamic Dies worked closely with the design agency, the box house, the artist, and the ink vendor to bring this concept to life. From early Zoom calls to final approvals, every detail was carefully engineered for on-press performance.

Color Innovation: The turquoise triangle appears darker because it’s printed directly on kraft. The background turquoise appears lighter because it’s printed over white ink. This clever “color hack” gave the illusion of two turquoise shades with a single ink.

Ink Layering Strategy: Required third-party ink vendor collaboration to ensure inks could successfully overprint without resistance.

Trapping and Registration: We worked with the agency to increase line thicknesses just enough to allow for proper trapping without compromising the design.

Plate Material Selection: A softer plate material helped ensure ink transfer was smooth but not overly heavy, especially important given the multi-ink layering.

The Results

Five-color effect using only three inks—via intelligent design and ink layering
Fine illustrations printed cleanly across a large, foldable structure
No remakes or registration issues
Praised by clients and customers alike, despite not being released for award submission

“The results—and the customer feedback—spoke for themselves.”

The Impact

This project proved how creative collaboration and smart engineering can turn a complex, fold-heavy box into a standout customer experience. Although it never made it to the award circuit, it remains a benchmark for what’s possible when you involve prepress early—and prioritize artist intent every step of the way.
