Problem Solved: Bold Packaging Starts With Smart Graphics

May 27, 2026 | News

Every packaging project comes with challenges. Sometimes it is managing complex graphics, multiple SKUs and compliance details. Other times, it’s creating practical packaging that holds up in the real world while keeping production efficient and repeatable.

Around here, we don’t really see those as problems. They are simply part of the process — and part of figuring out the right solution. And if you follow Chad’s Wrong Tool Workshop you already know what can happen when the wrong tool is involved.

So, we thought it was time to start sharing a few real-world examples of how we help customers navigate packaging complexities before they become production problems. Welcome to Problem Solved

The reality is, packaging projects rarely fail because of one major issue. More often, small details create delays, inconsistencies or costly setbacks for a variety of reasons: incompatible files, missing bleeds, barcode placement errors, approval bottlenecks or graphics that look great on screen but do not translate cleanly to press.

That’s why we work behind the scenes to catch potential issues early and help packaging projects stay on track. And a lot of this work happens in the graphic details customers may never see — making sure artwork and files are ready to perform smoothly on press.

Let’s dive into how we stop graphics and prepress challenges from ever becoming a problem.

From Screen to Press

Many production issues begin upstream. A package might look great on screen, but if the files are not prepared correctly or the artwork is not optimized for production, small issues can quickly become costly delays.

This is why prepress plays such an important role. File preparation, color correction, formatting, trapping, bleeds and layout adjustments all help ensure artwork performs properly during printing and converting. Addressing those details early helps improve efficiency, reduce waste and maintain print consistency throughout production.

We asked our art director what it takes to address these types of challenges. She explained the importance of bridging the gap between creative vision and production reality. This requires combining design expertise with technical precision to recreate logos, refine proofs and prepare production-ready files that will perform accurately on press.

A collaborative process is especially important when customers are unsure whether an idea will work in production. Rather than simply flagging problems, our team digs into the details and refines artwork to help customers understand what is possible.

Balancing Flexibility and Consistency

Sometimes the challenge is not flashy graphics or national distribution. It’s about creating practical packaging that works reliably during harvest season. For example, we support regional Amish growers with tomato boxes designed for real-world handling and hand-packing operations.

While the boxes appear simple, they must withstand transport, display and repeated seasonal demand while remaining easy to assemble in labor-intensive environments. (We go into detail in the case study.)

The solution included flexible print and plate options such as stock box designs, swappable farm-name plates and clear labeling for different tomato varieties. The result is packaging that allows growers to move product efficiently from field to market while maintaining flexibility for individual farm identities.

Managing Brand Precision at Scale

For brands with established shelf recognition, packaging details become even more critical. When Southern Tier Brewing Company needed cartons for multiple varieties of its well-known Pumpking line, the project required coordination of state-specific requirements, multiple bar codes, graphic approvals and brand consistency across several SKUs.

Case in point: We worked closely with the Southern Tier team to review artwork and confirm production readiness. The tall order included making sure every visual and compliance element was positioned correctly before production moved forward.

The solution is packaging that preserves the brand’s identity for its fans while supporting operational efficiency at retail scale.
